In India, the High Court is the highest court in the state or union territory. Each state and union territory has its own High Court, and the jurisdiction of the High Court extends over that particular state or union territory. The High Court has the power to hear appeals from lower courts, and also has the power of judicial review over the actions of the state government and its agencies. The Chief Justice of a High Court is appointed by the President of India.
